Tips For Bringing A Vehicle Out Of Winter Storage
Posted by Royal Storage | 11-06-2018
As winter ends and it’s safe for you to take your vehicle out of hibernation, make sure to follow these basic, but important steps to ensure your vehicle has a smooth transition from winter storage to road ready.
Visual Inspection:
Perform a thorough visual checkup of the key mechanical components of your vehicle underneath and under the hood. Check for any leaks, loose wires and hoses for cracks, corrosion, or deterioration.
Use a screwdriver or wrench to ensure all the clamps are tight. Inspect and replace any dirty filters on the vehicle. Lastly, check the tires for cracks, bulges, oxidation, or deflation.
Inspect the Battery and Charge:
If you didn’t have your battery on a maintainer during its time in storage, make sure to connect and fully charge the battery. Make sure to carefully examine all the cables and terminals for any signs of corrosion. Clean carefully if necessary. If your battery won’t hold a charge, it should be replaced. Only start the engine once the battery is fully charged.
Change Fluids and Test Engine Oil:
Check all fluid levels for your transmission, fuel, brakes, power steering, coolant, windshield wipers etc. Replace or add where necessary. Do not forget to test the engine oil and replace it if needed. This will help maintain the overall health of your engine. To test the engine oil, pull the dipstick to check for oil levels and add more if required.
You’re almost there! Just a few more steps before you hit the road.
Start the Engine:
Remember your car has been idle for quite some time. Check the exhaust and remove anything you might have placed in the tailpipe during storage. After you start it, give your engine time to warm up and let it run for some time before driving. While you wait, look around for any signs of smoke or leaks, and check to see if all the lights and turn signals are working. Look for any warning signs on the dashboard.
Driving Around and Final Checkups:
Before you’re ready to take your vehicle on the road, press on the pedals to test if they feel normal. Drive around on a less crowded street for at least 30 minutes to make sure everything is working properly.
Clean it up:
Give your vehicle a good wash and waxing and get ready to hit the road, you’re good to go. Enjoy the road and be safe!
